People ask us to do all sorts of electrical work. Part of being trustworthy is knowing exactly where to stop.
Comfortable ground for us: replacing switches and receptacles, swapping in dimmers, hanging light fixtures and ceiling fans on existing boxes, resetting and testing GFCIs, and tracing a breaker that keeps tripping so you finally know what is actually on that circuit.
Off limits without a licensed electrician: panel changes, new breakers, new circuits, aluminium wiring remediation, service upgrades, and anything requiring an ESA permit and inspection.
Sometimes we open a box and find something genuinely unsafe. Burned backstab connections. A missing ground. An overloaded junction buried behind drywall. When that happens we stop, make it safe, show you the photo, and point you to a licensed specialist. It costs us the job now and then. We are fine with that.
